Q) What is Dutching ?
A) Dutching or Dutch Betting - involves betting on more than one selection in a race or an event in order to cover all bases. For example - betting on the home team in a football match to win but then placing a second bet on the team drawing. By sharing the risk of losing you lessen your profits, but increase your chance of winning overall.
Q) What is Variable Dutching ?
A) Historically, Dutch betting involves calculating your stakes so that whatever the outcome, the profit is equal. With variable dutching, the percentage of profit is adjusted per bet. For example - If you wished to Dutch 4 bets. You could adjust the ratios so that the 2 outsiders break even, and the 2 favorites make a profit.
Screenshot below shows an example of dutching 2 selections to break even and 2 other selections to make a profit. This is an example of variable dutching.
Q) How are the stakes worked out ?
A) When the profits are set to be equal whatever the outcome the math's is actually fairy simple. But as soon as you change the ratios so that they are not equal the math's becomes very complicated and requires the use of simultaneous equations.
